It is often said that patience is rewarded, but is this always the case?
Rocky, an eight-year-old dog, waited years for happiness, but it never seemed to come. Instead, his life took a drastic turn, leaving him fighting to survive. After having a hard life, Rocky ended up in a shelter, facing euthanasia with no one to rescue him.
The odds were stacked against him, but he managed to hang on.
Facing Euthanasia
In February 2024, a TikTok user known as ‘Shelter Dogs of AZ’ posted a heartbreaking video of Rocky. This black-and-white dog waited by the shelter door every day, hoping someone would come for him.
Unfortunately, no one showed any interest. His experiences with owners had always been unfortunate. His first owner tried to sell him on Facebook Marketplace and his second owner surrendered him to an Arizona animal shelter.
This took a severe toll on Rocky’s emotional well-being. When he was taken to Maricopa County Animal Care & Control in Phoenix, Arizona, he began injuring himself in the kennel. The stressful shelter environment made him react to other dogs and tried to escape many times.
Katie Gerlach, who created the TikTok video of Rocky, told Newsweek, “According to shelter policies, Rocky was given a five-day deadline.” He was placed on the pre-euthanasia list, and if no one intervened within those five days, he would have been euthanized. Gerlach shared Rocky’s story on social media, hoping to find him a home and save his life.
A Fight for Rocky’s Life
“The shelter has changed Rocky’s status, and he is no longer adoptable to the general public. He can ONLY be saved by a New Hope rescue. We need an only-dog adopter or foster, plus funds for a rescue to save his life,” Gerlach wrote in one of her videos.
The New Hope rescue targets dogs with severe medical or behavioral issues, which makes them unsuitable for adoption by the general public.
Rocky needed someone with experience and determination to save him.
Days passed, but no one came. Rocky grew increasingly desperate as he anxiously awaited rescue, with time running out. Then, just before his scheduled euthanasia, a local rescue called Rescue Street saved Rocky.
In the end, patience paid off for Rocky. Despite the overwhelming odds, his life took an unexpected turn for the better.

A caring individual came forward to end his days of loneliness! Eventually, Rocky is finally going to find a loving home.
Overall, the most important thing is that he’s alive and safe. Brighter days are ahead for him.
