If you’re a pet owner you know how hard it is to stop yourself from giving your fur baby a treat everytime they give you that look. This cat who weighs 43 pounds shows us what happens when you take it too far.

How He Ended Up At the Shelter

The “Sumo-Cat,” also called Oscar, sadly ended up at the shelter because his previous owners had to go to the hospital. Although we hope that his previous owners have recovered, it was maybe best for Oscar’s health that he had to end up in a new home where he could lose some of his unhealthy overweight.

Traveling To His Foster Home (Almost Breaking the Crate)

Oscar was adopted by one of the founders of the shelter. When they brought him home, they needed two people to carry him to the car and the bottom of his crate (which he almost didn’t fit into) was on the verge of breaking because of his chunkiness.

A Trip to the Vet Ends with Good News

Naturally, his new owners immediately booked a vet appointment to assess the severity of his obesity.

Surprisingly, despite his huge size, Oscar’s health was in relatively good shape. Other than being overweight, he only suffered from arthritis (which is expected at his age of 7 years). His bloodwork was good and his organs appeared to be healthy (although they were difficult to see on the X-Ray through the many layers of fat).

All he needs now is a new diet and lots of love.

Finding a Litterbox Big Enough For Him

Because of his large size, they couldn’t find a normal cat litter box that would fit him. Instead, they had to go to a mechanic shop and buy an oil pan. They also struggled to find a cat bed that could hold him and had to get a large dog bed that could accommodate his size.

Likewise, to weigh him, they had to purchase a human scale in order to measure his precise weigh – which turned out to be a whopping 43 pounds.

Oscar’s Weightloss Journey

In the short time that Oscar has spent in his new home, he has already lost 7 pounds and is well on his way to becoming a healthy and even happier cat.

Normally, it’s quite dangerous for a cat to lose so much weight during such a short period of time. But Oscar’s weightloss was always monitored by vets, and also absolutely necessary to stop his heart from working overtime – even when he was just sitting around you could hear his laboured breathing.

In conclusion, loving your cat a little too much and giving them a little too many treats can have disastrous results. But Oscar’s future is looking bright now that he’s surrounded by people who love him but also keep his health in mind.
