Glen is no ordinary goose. He is an Embden goose, a breed from Germany known for its deep historical roots and currently considered endangered. It is one of the oldest domesticated goose breeds, with origins dating back 200 years.

They are a hardy breed.

Embden geese mature early, and when they look for a mate, it is usually for life. That explains Glen’s dedication; unfortunately, he chose a human instead of his kind. The egg of an Emden goose is enormous, weighing about 170 grams. They are large birds with pure white feathers, bright blue eyes, and orange beaks and feet. Like Glen, they often weigh around 30 pounds.

They can be aggressive.

While they have a calm and friendly temperament, they protect their territory and mates with aggression. This is why Glen does not like other animals coming near Shirley. Sometimes, he won’t even allow humans near Shirley.

They are known for their dedication.

This is undoubtedly true because Glen is very dedicated to Shirley. He will watch over her while she sleeps, be cautious around her if she goes near fire, and is always aware of her whereabouts. Each time Shirley peeks out a window, Glen is there right outside. He often honks to let Shirley know he is around.

Lifespan

Embden geese can live up to 20 years or more with proper care. German conservation groups list the Embden goose as “seriously endangered” due to its declining population in native regions.

A heartwarming fact shared by Shirley is how Glen can sense when she isn’t feeling well. Shirley has multiple sclerosis, and each time she feels low, Glen climbs into her lap and settles down to comfort her.  According to Shirley, Glen does not have eyes for anyone else and has all the characteristics of an incredible husband.

This story reminds us that love and loyalty can come from unexpected places. It challenges the conventional notions of companionship and care.
