As the summer sun beats down, ZooTampa stands as a beacon of compassion and ingenuity in ensuring the comfort and safety of its diverse animal inhabitants. With temperatures soaring, the zoo’s dedicated team of keepers and veterinarians spring into action each day, from early morning checks on habitats and water levels to the strategic placement of cooling misters and shade structures. Every detail is meticulously planned to create a sanctuary from the sweltering Florida sun. Through collaboration with experts and a commitment to community education, ZooTampa not only adapts to the realities of climate change but also leads by example in compassionate animal care during heatwaves.

Shade structures and misting fans are strategically placed throughout the zoo to offer relief to animals, while pools and water features provide refreshing dips. They assess water levels in pools and ensure that shade structures are in optimal condition to provide ample relief from the sun’s heat.

Special Treats and Frozen Snacks

Animals receive special treats like ice blocks filled with fruit or frozen fish to cool down and stay hydrated. The zoo has introduced frozen delicacies to the menus of many of its animals; this latest addition was made possible by a local firm that contributed 150 pounds of shaved ice.

Air-Conditioned Dens

Many animals have access to air-conditioned dens or indoor spaces where they can retreat from the heat and relax. Keepers regularly refill water sources and adjust misting systems to maintain a comfortable environment, even during the hottest hours of the day.

Pacing Activities

Zookeepers adjust feeding and enrichment activities to cooler parts of the day, reducing stress on the animals. Employees at the zoo make sure that the surroundings mimic the habitats of the animals. For example, rhinos can mud-coat their skin to protect themselves from the sun and wallow around as they would in the wild.
